What Is This Canned Coffee Thing?

Coffee in the Can

Canned coffee is often sweet. However, some versions, usually the ones marketed toward men, can be very bitter. Many leave a metallic aftertaste in our mouths.

Canned coffee almost always comes in 190-gram cans. It is mainly sold in Japan, and frankly, it has probably already peaked in popularity, which is why the manufacturers keep coming out with so many new brands.

For some inexplicable reason, canned coffee speaks to us. Well, the reasons aren't wholly inexplicable, but they never quite add up to a satisfactory finish -- which is kind of like canned coffee itself, come to think of it. One reason we love canned coffee is that it epitomizes certain aspects of modern Japan. That's why we featured it in our very first book, Kuhaku & Other Accounts from Japan. Chin Music Press founder Bruce Rutledge had this to say about canned coffee in an article on the company:

"It became a sort of metaphor for us. Americans tend to focus on the samurai ethic, geisha, blue-suited salarymen, green tea, Zen, etc., and so we wanted ... to focus on the equally prominent things that often get overlooked. Canned coffee is the most glaring example of that, I suppose."

This is why we don't let Bruce write canned coffee reviews.

But we hope you will.

Caffeinated Goods

Canned coffee is more than a drink. It's a whole fidgety, jacked-up subculture that bonds young punks, middle-aged office workers, fatigued students and even old guys in polo shirts. Enter the world, join the addiction and shop for caffeine-inspired art that would make Balzac proud.

The Coffee Journals

"In the half-lotus position I sit, typing this out and enjoying a lucid dream in which I am being carried upon the 'shoulders' of a glinting, dew-speckled mass of Fire 'Siphon Method' coffee cans."
